Lady Flier Freshman Skylar Colvin impressive in varsity debut! Girls win 9-1 in home opener!
In a game at the varsity level, most freshmen are a bit awed by their presence on the diamond. Not Skylar Colvin. The touted talent proved her value to the Lady Fliers today with a dominant 3 hitter over the Lady Flashes! The right handed hurler showed no freshmen jitters in striking out seven and walking only two. The young lady also benefited by a defense which gobbled up grounders and chased down outfield flies. Skylar, who hits in the prestigious 3 hole also added two bass hits to the eight hit Flier attack. It was quite a day for the daughter of a pilot!
Willard went down in order for y to be first three innings. Using a variety of pitches, the freshman struck out four and walked none. Meanwhile, after two scoreless at bats, the Lady Fliers broke out with four runs in the third. Kendall Bailey led off with the second single of her three hit afternoon. Jenna Burroughs reached on an error. Then Skylar, Taylor Gray, Sami Friend, and Kamdyn Taylor each plates safeties. After three, it was 4-0 with the local teens in the lead and the freshman in control.
Skylar finally lost her perfect game bid when the visitors scored their lone run in the top of the fourth. A walk followed by two singles proved the freshman was ‘human’ after all. But Skylar did show that Coach Marc Marshall has few pitching worries for four years.
The girls put the game basically out of reach when they scored five times in the fifth. Skylar delivered her second hit to lead off. Senior Sami Friend added her second single of the game. Freshman Maddie Dukeshire contributed a single. Shortstop Kamdyn Taylor walked and her sister Kinsley, senior catcher, added her second base hit. The five run explosion culminated when yet another fine freshman and starting right fielder Jenna Distel rapped a sharp single into centerfield. 9-1.
For the game the winners rapped out 14 hits. Not bad for the first game of the year. Multi hit afternoons came from Kendall( 3), Kinsley, Skylar, Sami, and the soohomore, Jenna Distel.
The girls play tomorrow at Lake. The Lady Fliers at the Lake Flyers. Congratulations, girls!
