Vermilion Scares Lady Fliers but Visitors Stay Perfect in the Lake Division. Four run five hit top of the Seventh over comes 5-3 Deficit! Win 7-5.
This afternoon on a beautiful weather day, the Lady Fliers defeated a winless but gritty Vermilion squad. The blue and gold teens pounded out 12 hits including five big knocks in the top of the seventh inning comeback!
Kendall Bailey slapped three hits, while freshman Maddie Dukeshire, senior Kinsley Taylor, and Taylar Gray each had two hits.
The Lady Fliers stranded two runners in the first after Kendal Bailey drew a leadoff free pass and Maddie singled. Then, the Lady Sailors came out aggressively. With Maddie in the circle, Vermilion scored three times courtesy of two hits, a walk, and two defensive errors. Not pretty! But the 0-4 Sailors were out fast yearning to get win number ONE.
In the second, the Flier bats ‘snored’ and they again were shut down. Vermilion came up and despite two more infield errors, Maddie escaped without yielding a run.
Finally, in the top of the third, torrid hitting Kendall Bailey rapped a leadoff double. She scored without another hit by her teammates. Taylar Gray slapped a grounder which the second base girl muffed allowing Kendall to run home with the Lady Fliers first run. Maddie set the home team down in the third, only giving up a base hit. The score now was 3-1, underdogs! And the dogs were out….several Bulldogs were seen with fans including two posing as Lady Flier mascots. The bowsers helped provide some perspective to the experience of watching girls’ softball. ????????????
The Lady Fliers knotted the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth. With one out, freshman second base girl, Karissa Smith singled. Shortstop Kam Taylor sacrificed Ms. Smith to second. Kendall singled to score Karissa and Maddie tied the game with one of her two base hits. Vermilion responded with a three hit one run bottom of the fourth to go back in front at 4-3. A good ball game for the fans!
In the Flier fifth, things looked promising. Taylar led off with a single and then Sami Friend walked. A 9-5-3 put out snuffed the exciting start and despite two singles and the walk, the teens from CLYDE High School remained behind at 4-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, with Skylar Colvin now in for relief, the Lady Sailors went down quickly despite another Flier error. Skylar struck out two.
Onto the sixth, Vermilion 4-3. When are the 7-2 girls going to get something going! Not in the sixth, that’s for sure. Coach Marc Marshall’s ball players went down in order. Vermilion then pushed across a key insurance run in the bottom of the frame. After an out, two singles and a walk made it 5-3 Sailors! Upset in the making!??
Wait, the teens in blue and gold had one more shot and plenty of hitting power coming to the plate. Number three in the batting order, Skylar smacked her first hit of the contest, a single.Taylar Gray also hit a safety. Two on,nobody out! Sami Friend, the right fielder scored two with a single. No outs still, Emily Hammer reached on a second base girl error….Sami scoring.
The catcher, Kinsley, added to the Flier scoring party with a single of her own. The fifth and final hit came on Kendall’s third single of the game. The Flier fans could finally be heard as their beloved daughters and granddaughters rallied with a four run seventh.
Vermilion, perhaps stunned, went down like a ship in the night. Skylar set the bottom of the order down, 1,2, pick up the win.
It was a close call for the girls. Vermilion had 10 hits and the Flier defense was not at its best…permitting four errors. But the girls’ fight won the night and the Lake Division battle. They now host Mansfield Madison tomorrow at noon.
Congratulations, Ladeeeeeeeee Fliers! Now 8-2.
