Lady Fliers Escape Upset Bid by Sandusky! Win on 3 run blast by freshman Skylar Colvin!
Today, some may have expected an easy game for our 7-2 Lady Fliers! They were playing Sandusky, 22-1 losers this week to Huron. Wait! Hold everything! Not to be!
The teens from Sandusky were out for redemption. Embarrassed obviously by their debacle with the Lady Tigers, Sandusky scored four runs in the top of sixth on four hits, a stolen base, and a Lady Flier error. Suddenly, the supposed underdog had a 6-4 lead over the favorite blue and gold.
Fortunately, the home town teens were guaranteed at least two more at bats. And in their half of the sixth, the top of the order was up. Leading off, continuing her torrid hitting, third base girl Kendall Bailey rapped her third hit of the contest. Maddie Dukeshire then singled Kendall to second. Two on, no out, and arguably the best freshman hitter in the area up. Skylar Colvin.
Skylar fell into an 0-2 hole. But then she got a fastball. And she kissed it ‘GOODBYE’….high over the fence in left center for the First Lady Flier homer of the season. A three run dinger! Fliers now lead 7-6 and it would stay that way thanks to reliever Skylar’s 1-2-3 seventh.
The girls pounded out 15 base hits tonight. Kendal had a double and two singles. Maddie, Skylar, and Emily Hammer each had two. Freshman Karissa cracked a double. Freshman….so many talented freshmen…..
The Fliers also struck out only twice. Discipline. Patience. Focus!
Maddie Dukeshire started in the circle and Skylar entered in the fourth. Both freshmen, remember! Mighty good, too. They combined for 10 strikeouts and just two walks.
So now, the Lady Fliers play at St.Joe tomorrow…weather permitting. No one expected such a battle today. But fortunately, we have some gritty girls who desire to be as good as they can be. And tonight, late, they came together…..surrounding the freshman hero at home plate as she scored the decisive run thanks to her amazing homer to left!
The girls now are 7-2 on the season
