Lady Fliers Roar to Huge First Half Lead and Withstand Perkins’ Second Half Run to Capture First Victory 62-53
No good team enjoys losing. The Lady Fliers especially have not enjoyed it for the exceptional track record they have enjoyed for nearly twenty seasons. After a brilliant 22-4 season in 2016-17, Coach Dave Lozier’s new team found itself 0-2 after decisive losses to strong Ross and St.Joe Teams.
Today’s first Lake Division game at Perkins loomed as a possible troublemaker given the long tradition of Flier teams laying a donut there! Not today, though! The Lady Fliers surged to a 27-5 Lead in the first half. Terrific play again by junior Alexis Keegan and her fellow post Jackie Smith helped open up some better outside shooting to give our girls a 34-19 Lead at the half.
Throughout the half or at least much of it, the Lady Fliers seemed a step quicker and an empty stomach hungrier than the dazed Pirates. And thoughts were on senior phenom Heidi Marshall, the state known point guard. Heidi came into the game 15 points shy of the 1000 point Mark. She swished 3 treys in the first 24 minutes to creep closer to the notable basketball player’s achievement. Yet, there was no indication Heidi, as humble as you could find, wanted anything from this game than a key league win.
In the third quarter, New Head Coach Brian Heck’s Lady Pirates attacked the ball and boards better. It nearly looked like a different team. Spurring their fierce surge was the game’s high scorer, Olivia Howard with 32 points for the game. Also in the third quarter, Heidi tossed in two more treys to break 1,000. Play was momentarily stopped for the superstar student – athlete. First she received a proud hug from her Head Coach, then she sprinted over to the mother she loves so much, Heather Dick Marshall to pose for a quick picture with the game ball! Dad admired her from his bench seat where he was the team bookkeeper!
Heidi’s accomplishment joins the ranks of other Lady Flier greats who have scored at least 1,000 points in CHS girls’ basketball history! Heidi now ranks up there with other scoring machines like Amanda Cahill, Kathy Aman, Rachel Crooks, Spencer Robles, Stephanie Meyer Lepley, Rachael Smetzler, Kaylee Griffin, Kim Lawrence, the late Sarah Pearson Crawford, Kelsey Michaels, and Heather Kwiatkowski. We ‘ think’ maybe Brianne Michaels, too!
Through the fourth quarter Perkins continued to play inspired ball. A once 22 Point lead sank to 52-46 before the blue and Gold steadied themselves to walk to the bus with a very welcomed 62-53 triumph.
Heidi led the Fliers with her season best 22 points including six three pointers! Alexis Keegan continued her fine play with 15 points and several rebounds as did the mighty strong JACKIE SMITH with 14 points and her share of boards as well! Maddie Bannister added three treys in her effort to regain her bomb talents. Every girl played in the varsity game.
The Junior Varsity fell 42-34. Grace Knehr had 13 points while Kaylee Eltringham added 10 and Brook Newsome 8. The junior varsity is now 1-2.
Next game will be Tuesday night at home versus rival Margaretta.
