Fliers Spank the Rebels 48-8
On the heals of last week’s incredible come from behind win at Anthony Wayne, it would be difficult to convince a high school football team that Toledo Bowsher would pose any real threat to our Fliers. The Rebels had not won a game and in the past, the Race Street High Boys demolished the Bowsher bunch. Tonight, as expected, The mighty Fliers soared to a rather easy 48-8 win.
Game stats told a story of how thorough the destruction of the Rebels was. The Fliers had 21 first towns to Bowsher’s 3. The good guys had a whopping 384 net yards gained to a woeful one for their opponent. Once again Coach Carter’s football family produced an impressive offensive balance with 189 yards on the ground and 184 in the air. Clearly, the Fliers offer many different weapons for opponents’ defenses to stop. Thus far, the offense has been a rather potent unit.
Only 2 interceptions thrown by Trevor Burtch and his fumble deep in His own territory caused some hiccups for the Flier ‘O’.
The Fliers opened their Scoring with 2:02 left in the first. Senior Connor Long scampered around the left side for a 15 yard touchdown run. Mason Johnson added the extra point.
Things began to fall apart for the Rebels in the second period. In the second Braydi Clark scored the first of his two touchdown runs with a 14 yard run for the end zone. Mason’s kick was good and with 10:02 left in the second, it was 14-0.
After a great 33 yard pass to Jaylen Johnson, Braydi bulled across from the two for his second score. Mason again was good with the kick. 21-0 Fliers!
Bowsher could not get to its locker room fast enough. The Fliers scored yet again when Trevor hit Logan Riehl for an 18 yard touchdown that included a great run with the pass for number 9. Halftime: 28-0.
To Bowsher’s credit, the Rebels came out determined to earn some respect in the third quarter. The Blue and red uniforms stopped the Blue and Gold three consecutive series before capitalizing on one of several turnovers the Fliers made. Trevor fumbled on his own nine, and two plays later the are Rebels’ quarterback tossed a 11 yard strike to get on the scoreboard. A two point run was good and with 3:17 left in the third period, the Fliers led 28-8.
The wound up winless Bowsher boys seemed to wake up the napping third quarter Flier offense. A seven play 3 minute drive of 57 yards culminating with a 13 yard touchdown pass from Trevor to Josh Jenne. Mason’s kick was no good. 34-8 with .17 left in the third.
In the fourth quarter southpaw sophomore quarterback, Ryan Lozier directed the team. With 7:26 left Lewis Orr intercepted a Rebel aerial and raced to the Bowsher 17. On the next play, Ryan found holes within the line and he darted to pay dirt for a touchdown. Mason kicked the extra point. 41-8 Fliers!
With junior varsity players enjoying some Friday night lights’ action, the Blue and Gold scored again. Nick Webb ran 25 yards with 1:12 left to add a little salt to the Rebels’ wounds. The extra point made it a final score of 48-8.
Statistically, Trevor was 14 of 28 passing and 2 interceptions. Braydi once again rushed over 109 yards with 116 yards on 18 carries and 2 touchdowns. Seven different boys caught at least one pass Friday night. Logan Riehl had 4 including one for six. Connor and Jaylen each caught 3 while senior Rob Webb caught two.
It was not a pretty game, but the Fliers finished off a team with little chances of winning. Now, the Blue and Gold finally get back to Robert J. Bishop Jr. Stadium next Friday with a game against Bay Division Port Clinton, a 42-17 winner over Fremont St. Joe tonight.
Once again, fine work by our mighty Clyde Flier football team! 4-0 with more to take down!
